On August 26, 2025, a glacial lake burst in Nepal, and a debris flow ran 42 kilometers down the gorge in 90 minutes, hitting the Gyirong border crossing at half past ten in the morning. In the surveillance footage, less than five seconds passed between the debris flow showing itself and swallowing the parking lot; buses and heavy trucks were knocked over like paper. The reports at the time: three dead, more than five hundred missing.

After the disaster, everyone asked about survival techniques: run into the street, or shelter in a building? The questions were specific, and so were the answers — but here is the conclusion first: against a debris flow this fast, technique is meaningless. A human sprint is about 10 meters per second; the flow’s front runs 10 to 20, and faster. The reaction window was under 5 seconds. You cannot outrun it, and you cannot out-hide it. The essence of survival was never how fast you run. It is how much you did before the roar arrived.

So rewind the clock. The debris flow formed on the Nepali side and traveled 90 minutes before reaching the crossing — those 90 minutes are the entire problem. Experts had worked out the arithmetic: if the upstream ice-and-rock collapse were detected, the downstream could gain about 20 minutes of warning. Provided the upstream has monitoring. And the post-disaster survey found 55 glacial lakes upstream of the Friendship Bridge, most of them absent from any routine monitoring database. The historical roll call was already written too: in 1981, a glacial-lake outburst on this same route killed more than 200 people; and one month before the disaster — July 2025 — the same region had another outburst flood. The risk was not unknown. It was known, listed, and precedented.

The Verdict

So the verdict is one sentence, and it is heavy: the Nepali side gave you 90 minutes to prepare — if any information-alerting system worked at all, there was no way five hundred people could just disappear.

This verdict must face its strongest opposition, and the opposition is fully valid: the source was in another country, beyond Chinese jurisdiction, where monitoring equipment cannot be planted; cross-border hydrological data sharing exists at the research level, not as standing emergency linkage; and ice-rock collapses are intrinsically fast, their warning windows inherently short. The merchants, tourists, and border residents of the crossing were concealed by no one — they were the victims of a blank space in the early-warning system. This is an institutional problem, not an attitude problem.

The opposition holds — and the conclusion hardens rather than softens. A foreign source: data sharing can be negotiated. Lakes off the books: monitoring can be added. A blank alerting system: one can be built. Every obstacle is an engineering problem; not one is a physics problem. The only unsolvable thing is those 5 seconds. Which means the answer had to live in the 90 minutes — and in those 90 minutes, there was nothing.

That day, someone did win. A tour guide, watching the weather radar in the early morning, saw rain clouds clustering and moved his entire group to a high viewing platform — 24 people, none lost. He waited for no institution, and no institution notified him. One person’s attention stood in for a missing mechanism.

This is the most direct proof that it didn’t have to happen: the method existed not only on paper; it was validated that very morning by an ordinary human being. What he did — watch upstream, judge the risk, move early — is exactly what the missing early-warning system should have been doing for everyone.

I simply felt this didn’t have to happen. The sentence assigns blame to no one. Mountains will still collapse, lakes will still burst, and dozens of unmonitored lakes remain off the list. The next time a 90-minute window starts ticking, the alarm should reach everyone — no one should have to spend those 5 seconds running.
