A consumer operating system cannot have all three: security, which means someone must control your behavior; freedom, which means the system must not control you; and low cognitive load, which means the user shouldn’t have to manage anything. Pick two.
I proposed this triangle and then thought for a long time: macOS seems to achieve all three. Looking closer, the cost is hidden in the transfer. iOS is radically simple, paying with freedom: app review for installs, jailbreaks for scripts. Linux is radically free, paying with cognitive load: anything is possible, provided you know how. Android splits the difference — half-freedom, but no direct executables; everything must run inside a VM. macOS’s answer is offloading: radically complex for developers, selling the cognitive load to the small crowd willing to pay it — you like tinkering, you tinker; most people never open a terminal. Its “all three” is trading the developers’ load for ordinary users’ comfort.
Someone will claim Windows holds all three sides. Windows’ real answer is to do none of them fully: security by lucky patching, freedom by whatever leaks through the compatibility layer, simplicity by thirty years of inertia.
So judge a system not by counting the virtues on its marketing page, but by finding which side of the triangle it cut — and who pays for it. The triangle never disappears. It only transfers: from users to developers, from the device to the cloud.
There is no free operating system. Only transferred load.
